NEW for 2024! Mandatory PECOS Enrollment Update!

WHAT:  New Requirement for Physicians Who Certify Patient Eligibility for HOSPICE

Effective May 1, 2024, for Medicare to pay for hospice services, the following physicians must enroll in Medicare or opt-out through PECOS (Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System). We recommend providers complete this effort by APRIL 1, 2024 to allow time for their application process.

  1. Hospice medical director or the physician member of the hospice interdisciplinary group who certifies the patient’s terminal condition.
  2. Patient-designated attending physician (if they have one) who certifies their terminal condition. (This physician category may apply to you.)

If you’re currently enrolled or opted out, you don’t need to do anything.

The hospice physician and attending physician need to be enrolled/opted-out at the time they make the certification or recertification of hospice care for a patient.

WHY:

Effective May 1, 2024, or as otherwise directed by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), FISS (Fiscal Intermediary Standard System) shall deny the hospice claim if the physician in the Attending field is not registered with PECOS. The Fiscal Intermediary Standard System (FISS) is the standard Medicare Part A claims processing system.

Big Bend Hospice wants to ensure that any physician who wishes to follow their patients as an “attending” can continue to do so by enrolling with PECOS, and be paid for their services.

WHEN: IMPLEMENTATION DATE: May 1, 2024

This is the date that physicians who wish to remain as “attending” for their patients on Hospice services must be enrolled with PECOS (or be opted out).

PECOS will send a list of NPIs (National Provider Identifier) that are eligible for certifying a beneficiary for Hospice care.  Only those listed are eligible for the role of “attending”.   If opted out, you CAN still referpatients to Hospice, but cannot be “attending”.

Please enroll by April 1st to ensure adequate time for your application to be processed!

Did you know you can enroll online using PECOS? PECOS is the online Medicare enrollment management system which allows you to:

  • Enroll as a Medicare provider or supplier
  • Review information currently on file
  • Upload your supporting documents
  • Electronically sign and submit your information online

Because PECOS is paperless, you no longer need to submit anything by mail. Additionally, PECOS online applications tend to process faster than paper applications.

If you wish to enroll using a paper application, those can also be found using the above link.
