Volunteer Opportunities

Big Bend Hospice offers opportunities that allow volunteers to choose a role in which they are comfortable and fulfilled. Traditionally, Volunteers serve around 3 hours/week and commit to a least one year of service.

Non-Direct Patient Care Volunteer Roles

Administrative/Clerical Volunteer

Provides office support through data entry, filing, assembling packets, and assisting staff with administrative projects.

Advisory Council Volunteer

Serves as a community ambassador, offering insight, feedback, and support to strengthen hospice services and outreach efforts (Jefferson, Madison, Taylor, Wakulla, Franklin, Gadsden, & Liberty counties only)

Bereavement Volunteer
Staff Support

Assists the bereavement team with mailings, resource preparation, memorial events, and grief support programming.

Community Relations Volunteer

Represents the organization at community events, health fairs, and outreach activities to increase awareness of hospice services.

Events and Special Projects Volunteer

Supports BBH events, Foundation activities, and short-term projects requiring flexible, hands-on assistance.

Handcrafters Volunteer

Creates handmade items such as quilts, cards, bears, and comfort gifts for patients, families, and caregivers.

Inpatient Unit Greeter

Welcomes visitors, offers directions, and provides a calm, supportive presence at the inpatient unit entrance.

Oak Tree Treasures Volunteer

Supports hospice thrift store operations through sorting, pricing, displaying items, and assisting customers.

Tea-Time Volunteer

Provides hospitality services by preparing and offering tea, snacks, and comfort items to families and visitors in BBH IPU’s on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Direct Patient Care Volunteer Roles

Birthday Brigade Volunteer

Helps celebrate hospice patients with cards, decorations, and small celebrations honoring their life and milestones.

Comfort Caller Volunteer

Provides supportive phone calls to caregivers to offer companionship, encouragement, and a caring connection.

Inpatient Unit Care Team Volunteer
Staff & Patient Support

Assists staff by providing comfort to patients and families through presence, light tasks, and emotional support in inpatient units.

Life Legacy Volunteer
Voices of the Heart – published by BBH

Records and helps preserve patients’ stories, memories, and messages as meaningful keepsakes for families.

Patient-Family Volunteer
Companionship/Respite

Offers companionship to patients and brief respite to caregivers through conversation, reading, or quiet presence.

Pet Peace of Mind Volunteer

Supports patients by helping care for their pets through tasks such as feeding, playing, and caring services.

Pet Therapy Volunteer
Facilities Only

Brings TMH certified therapy animals to BBH IPU’s and BBH partner facilities to provide comfort, joy, and emotional support to patients and families.

Transportation/Errands Volunteer

Assists patients or caregivers with essential transportation and errands such as pharmacy pickups, grocery runs, doctor visits or supply delivery.

6 for 6 Volunteer Intern

A structured, time-limited internship for college-age students seeking immersive experience in hospice and palliative care services.

Valor Volunteer
Ceremonies

Participates in honoring Veterans through recognition ceremonies that acknowledge service, dignity, and legacy.

Vet-to-Vet Companionship Volunteer

Provides peer support and companionship to Veteran patients through shared military experience and understanding.

Vigil Volunteer

Offers a calm, compassionate presence at the bedside of patients who are actively dying when family or caregivers are unavailable.
