Volunteer Opportunities

Big Bend Hospice offers opportunities that allow volunteers to choose a role in which they are comfortable and fulfilled. Traditionally, Volunteers serve around 3 hours/week and commit to a least one year of service.

• Direct Patient-Family Team Volunteers provide support to patients in their homes, in local nursing or assisted living facilities, in our Margaret Z. Dozier Hospice House, or in the new FCCCC in-patient unit at TMH. As a patient/family volunteer, you may provide companionship, socialization, caregiver respite, emotional and practical support, assist with small tasks in the home, be a peaceful positive presence, and bring peace of mind to their loved ones.
• Transportation Team Volunteers provide rides and assist our patients with getting to appointments or places around town like the grocery store. Must be 25 years old.
• Errands / Deliveries Team Volunteers may drop off library books, pick up groceries, and deliver supplies.
• Vigil Volunteer Volunteers sit with patients and/or families during the final hours of life, a peaceful presence and compassionate listeners. They are an invited guest into a most sacred and personal transition. Their primary concern is the comfort of the patient.
• Valor Team Volunteers perform Valor Ceremonies for Veterans, offer direct veteran-centric companionship or respite care in the veteran’s home or facility, and participate in community outreach activities to increase awareness of veteran’s benefits regarding hospice care.
• Greeter Team Volunteers welcome guests at our Hospice House and offer general support and direction.
• Administration / Clerical / Special Projects Team Volunteers may use data processing software, computer, organizational, and office skills to assist administrative staff.
• Comfort Callers Team Volunteers make weekly telephone calls to patients and caregivers to engage them in conversation and assess their needs. Requests are directed to the appropriate team manager.
• Handcrafters / Quilters Team Volunteers may make quilts, afghans, lap blankets, memory bears, feely hearts, or participate in craft events with staff.
• Special Events Team Volunteers assist our staff with internal or public relations events, and pre or post-event tasks.
• Pet Peace of Mind Team Volunteers help keep pets and patients together when they need each other most by helping with their pet caregiving duties.
• Adult and Youth Bereavement Team Volunteers may help our bereavement staff make follow-up calls or mailings to family members after their loved one has died, facilitate grief support groups, our youth nights, or annual camps.
• Community Relations Team Volunteers may represent Big Bend Hospice at health fairs and community events, with presentations and workshops.
• Tea-Time Tuesday Team Volunteers provide sweet treats and savory snacks to patients, guests, and staff.
• Birthday Brigade Team Volunteers help patients feel special by providing a celebration for their birthday.
• End-of-Life Doula Team Volunteers provide additional guidance, end-of-life education, vigil support, and ensure advance care plans are honored.
• 6 for 6 Internship Suited for students looking for an immersive experience who can commit to 6 hours a week for 6 months. 6 for 6 interns visit with our patients to provide socialization, companionship, and assistance around the house when needed. Intern benefits include attending IDT meetings, clinical ride-a-longs, and meeting with a hospice physician.
