Volunteer Opportunities

Big Bend Hospice offers opportunities that allow volunteers to choose a role in which they are comfortable and fulfilled. Traditionally, Volunteers serve around 3 hours/week and commit to a least one year of service.

Direct Patient-Family Team

Volunteers in this role provide vital emotional, social, and practical support to patients in various care settings, including homes, assisted living facilities, and inpatient hospice units. By offering companionship, caregiver respite, and a calming presence, these volunteers greatly enhance the patient’s quality of life and help ease the emotional burden on families during a deeply personal time.

Transportation Team

These volunteers help maintain a patient’s independence by providing safe and reliable transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential errands. Their support ensures patients can access necessary care and stay connected to their communities, reducing feelings of isolation and dependence.

Errands/Deliveries Team

Volunteers in this team run errands and deliver important items such as books, groceries, and medical supplies. Their service minimizes logistical stress for patients and families, ensuring that patients’ needs are met quickly and efficiently, allowing them to focus on comfort and healing.

Vigil Volunteer

Vigil volunteers offer a profound service by sitting with patients during their final hours. Their quiet presence and attentive listening provide reassurance and comfort during life’s most vulnerable transition. For both patients and families, they bring peace, dignity, and companionship when it is most needed.

Valor Team

These volunteers honor the unique experiences of Veterans through specialized ceremonies and care. By recognizing their service and offering veteran-centric support, they affirm dignity and identity, making patients feel valued and understood at the end of life.

Greeter Team

Greeter volunteers create a welcoming and supportive first impression for visitors at our In-Patient Units. Their warm presence helps ease the anxiety of families and patients entering our In-Patient Unit, fostering a calm, friendly environment.

Administration / Clerical / Special Projects Team

These behind-the-scenes volunteers support the smooth operation of hospice services. By handling clerical tasks and special projects, they enable clinical staff to focus more time and energy on direct patient care, indirectly enhancing the overall experience for patients.

Comfort Callers Team

Volunteers make regular, compassionate phone calls to patients and caregivers, offering conversation and emotional support while also assessing needs. This ongoing connection helps patients feel cared for and noticed, and ensures timely responses to any arising concerns.

Handcrafters/
Quilters Team

Volunteers create handcrafted items like quilts and memory bears, providing patients with physical warmth and emotional comfort. These personalized gifts offer tangible reminders of care, compassion, and community.

Special Events Team

These volunteers support internal and public events that build community, raise awareness, and celebrate the hospice mission. Their efforts contribute to a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for patients, families, and staff alike.

Pet Peace of Mind Team

Volunteers in this program assist with pet care so patients can remain with their beloved animals. This support helps preserve the emotional bond between patients and pets, often providing comfort, companionship, and a sense of normalcy.

Adult and Youth Bereavement Team

Volunteers support grieving families through calls, mailings, and group facilitation. Their support helps our staff with loved ones coping with loss, ensuring that emotional support extends beyond the patient’s passing.

Community Relations Team

Volunteers represent hospice at events and workshops, educating the public about services and resources. Their outreach helps normalize conversations around hospice care and ensures that more people can access the support they need when facing life-limiting illness.

Tea-Time Tuesday Team

These volunteers offer comforting refreshments to patients, families, and staff. Their thoughtful service adds a touch of normalcy and joy, fostering moments of connection and warmth in the hospice setting.
