By Bill Wertman, CEO, Big Bend Hospice

For more than 40 years, Big Bend Hospice has been part of the fabric of this community, walking alongside families during some of life’s most difficult moments. That work is often quiet and deeply personal. It happens at the bedside, in living rooms, and in conversations that stay with families long after they’re over.

But every so often, that same mission comes to life in a different way—out in the open, surrounded by the very community that makes it possible.

Spring Fling is one of those moments.

Hosted by the Big Bend Hospice Foundation, Spring Fling brings together local restaurants, community partners, and supporters for an evening that reflects the heart of who we are. It’s a celebration of connection, of shared purpose, and of the belief that caring for one another is something we all have a role in.

There’s something meaningful about gathering in this way. Around food, conversation, and familiar faces, you’re reminded that hospice care is not just a service, it’s a community effort. It’s sustained by people who understand that compassion doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when a community chooses to show up.

What makes Spring Fling special isn’t just the event itself, but what it represents. Every plate served, every conversation shared, and every person in attendance helps support care that reaches far beyond that evening. It helps ensure that patients and families across the Big Bend receive the kind of support that honors dignity, eases burdens, and provides comfort when it’s needed most.

That impact is felt in ways that aren’t always visible. It’s in the guidance offered to a family navigating difficult decisions. It’s in the quiet reassurance of a nurse sitting at a bedside. It’s in the ongoing support that continues long after a loss.

Spring Fling is a reflection of all of that.

If you’ve experienced it before, you know the feeling it creates. And if you haven’t, I encourage you to learn more and consider being part of it. You can find more information about the event at: https://bigbendhospice.org/spring-fling/

Because at its core, Spring Fling is about more than a single evening. It’s about a community coming together to ensure that no one faces life’s most difficult moments alone.
