In healthcare, timing matters. So does clarity.
When someone is navigating a serious illness, they don’t just need care; they need to understand where to turn, who can help, and what that support looks like. At Big Bend Hospice and parent company, Big Bend Health, we’ve always believed that access to care begins with understanding it.
That belief is what led us to a recent change.
Beginning June 1, our Transitions Supportive Care program will be known as Big Bend Palliative Care.
At first glance, it may seem like a simple name change. But behind it is something more intentional: a commitment to making our services easier to recognize, easier to understand, and easier to access for the patients and families who need them.
For many, the name “Transitions Supportive Care” required explanation. It didn’t always clearly convey what the program offered or when it might be appropriate. Palliative care, on the other hand, is a well-established part of the healthcare continuum. It describes a specific kind of support: care focused on improving quality of life for individuals living with serious illness, often provided alongside ongoing treatment.
This is the care our team has been delivering all along.
The name is changing, but everything else remains the same. The same experienced team. The same compassionate, patient-centered approach. The same referral process, eligibility, and service area across the Big Bend region.
Most importantly, the same commitment to helping patients feel better, live more comfortably, and navigate complex medical decisions with confidence and support.
Palliative care is often misunderstood. It is not hospice. It does not require a patient to stop curative treatment. In fact, it exists earlier in the course of illness, offering an added layer of support at a time when patients and families are often overwhelmed by information, decisions, and uncertainty.
It focuses on symptom management, emotional support, and coordination of care…meeting people where they are and helping them live as fully as possible.
That work has been happening here for years. This change simply brings clarity to it.
It also reflects a broader effort to align our services under the Big Bend Health umbrella, making it easier for patients, families, and referral partners to understand the full continuum of care available to them.
From palliative care to hospice, our mission remains consistent. We walk alongside people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives, offering guidance, comfort, and support every step of the way.
Names matter because they help people find what they need.
And if this change helps even one patient access care earlier, feel more supported, or better understand their options, then it is a step in the right direction. Because in the end, the name is not the most important part; the care is.
