Juneteenth is a day that invites us to pause.
It is a time to celebrate freedom, reflect on our shared history, and recognize the resilience and contributions of Black Americans who have helped shape our communities, our institutions, and our country.
Here in the Big Bend, those contributions are woven into the fabric of the region we call home. They are reflected in our neighborhoods, churches, schools, businesses, and families. They are part of the story of who we are as a community.
At Big Bend Hospice, we have the privilege of serving people from every walk of life. Every day, we are welcomed into homes and entrusted with stories that span generations. We meet people whose lives have been defined by service, sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and love for family.
Those stories remind us that every life is unique, but every life is equally valuable.
That belief is central to our mission.
Hospice care is rooted in dignity. It begins with recognizing the inherent worth of every person and honoring the experiences that have shaped them. Whether someone is sharing memories from childhood, reflecting on a lifetime of work, or surrounded by family members carrying on traditions that have been passed down for generations, we are reminded that every person’s story deserves to be heard and respected.
Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate those stories and the people behind them.
It is also a reminder of the importance of community. Throughout our history, progress has been made when people have come together to support one another, lift one another up, and create opportunities for future generations.
I see that same spirit throughout the Big Bend every day.
I see it in our patients and families. I see it in our volunteers and team members. And I see it in the countless individuals who continue working to make our communities stronger, more compassionate, and more inclusive.
As we observe Juneteenth, I encourage us all to take a moment to reflect on the values that bring us together: dignity, respect, compassion, and a commitment to caring for one another.
Those values are worth celebrating today, and every day, because every story matters, every person matters, and every life deserves to be honored.
